Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated "935" in the lower right. 65 x 46 cm (25.5 x 18.1 in). [AW].
• Complex composition of an abstract interplay of form and color.
• Material experiments lead Alfred Reth to new forms of expression.
• He traveled to Paris in 1905, where he was one of the earliest Cubists and found his way to complete abstraction.
• Alongside Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Hans Arp, Reth participated in the artists' association “Abstraction-Création”.
PROVENANCE: Private collection.
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
LITERATURE: Guy Loudmer, Paris, June 20, 1985, lot 80 (illustrated on p. 23).
Sotheby's, London, March 25, 1992, lot 40 (illustrated on p. 48).
Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, 684th auction, November 21, 1992, lot 349 (illustrated in color on plate 29).
Mu-Terem Galeria, Budapest, October 24, 2005, lot 129 (illustrated on p. 157).
Good overall impression. Overall with craquelure and isolated small color losses, more pronounced in the center black area. Some rubbing and with paper masking tape around the edges. Small isolated retouched spots, mostly along the lower edge of the image. The condition report was compiled in daylight and with the help of a UV light source to the best of our knowledge and belief.
