Lot description
Werner Tübke
1929 - 2004
Am Gardasee. 1998.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated lower left. Handwritten title on the reverse of the stretcher. 47.5 x 63.8 cm (18.7 x 25.1 in).
Further works from the collection of Prof. Dr. Manfred Pohlen and Dr. Margarethe Bautz-Holzherr, Marburg, will be offered in a special online sale from January 15 to February 15, 2026. Full proceeds will go to the Pohlen-Bautz-Holzherr Foundation. [KA].
• A complex composition of extraordinary narrative density.
• Drawing on the imagery of Dürer and Bruegel, Tübke creates his own timeless cosmos of human existence.
• In the summer of 2025, Tübke was honored with a solo exhibition entitled “Metamorphoses” at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main.
• Works by the artist can be found in important German collections, including the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Hasso Plattner Collection in Potsdam.
PROVENANCE: Collection of Prof. Dr. Manfred Pohlen and Dr. Margarethe Bautz-Holzherr, Marburg.
LITERATURE: Brigitte Tübke-Schellenberger, Werner Tübke, Das malerische Werk. Verzeichnis der Gemälde 1976 bis 1999, Dresden 1999, CR no. G 322.
In good condition. Several tiny areas fluoresce under UV light: probably the primer, which shows through due to the artist's multi-layered painting technique. The upper edge of the picture is slightly rubbed and partially soiled. The condition report was prepared in daylight and with the aid of a UV light source to the best of our knowledge and belief.
