Rudolf Schlichter
1890 - 1955
Frauenschuhe. 1942/7.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated “1942/7” in the lower right. 77.5 x 56 cm (30.5 x 22 in).
[AR].
• A wonderfully dense, richly detailed floral composition marking the transition between Schlichter’s New Objectivity style and his later, fantastical-surreal imagery.
• In the year this work was created, the artist’s Munich studio, along with numerous works, was destroyed in a bombing raid.
• In private family ownership since its acquisition; offered on the international auction market for the first time (source: artprice.com).

PROVENANCE: Private collection, Switzerland (acquired directly from the artist).
Private collection, Switzerland (inherited from the above).

In good condition. Very occasional fine, barely noticeable craquelure, slightly more prevalent along the upper edge of the painting. The stretcher frame is also very faintly visible on the recto. Along the edges of the painting, there is slight paint wear in places, as well as some retouching. There are also tiny, dot-like retouches in places within the composition, such as in the stems of the flowers. The color at the top edge of the painting varies slightly, but under UV light, this is not consistently recognizable as retouching. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the aid of a UV light source. AND to the best of our knowledge and belief.
