Andy Warhol
1928 - 1987
Neuschwanstein. 1987.
Synthetic-Polymer-Drawing.
With the estate stamp on the reverse, as well as a faint stamp from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the handwritten number “VF 71.003”. On firm, hand-made wove paper by HMP (with the watermark). 80.5 x 59 cm (31.6 x 23.2 in), size of sheet.
Created in the context of the famous color silkscreen prints “Neuschwanstein” (1987, Feldmann/Schellmann/Defendi II.372) commissioned by Bayerische Rück Insurance Company to mark its anniversary. [AH].
• Rarity: To date, only one other drawing of the “Neuschwanstein” subject has been offered on the international auction market (source: artprice.com).
• Drawing and silkscreen in dialogue: The lines of the drawing are nearly identical to those of the Neuschwanstein print and bear witness to Warhol’s creative process.
• More than just a “Factory Man”: With masterful strokes, Warhol creates unique drawings of outstanding quality and precision.
• Last but not least: From the final year of the artist’s life, who passed away unexpectedly.
Accompanied by a written confirmation from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., New York, dated December 12, 2008.
