Hans (Jean) Arp
1886 - 1966
Composition dans un cercle No. 1. 1962.
Relief, Duralumin.
Verso with the engraved signature and number. Copy 4 of 5. Diameter: 30 cm (11.8 in). [KA].

• Abstract relief in Hans Arp’s characteristic biomorphic style.
• Offered on the international auction market for the first time.
• Excellent provenance: received as a gift directly from the artist and in the same family for over 50 years.
• As early as 1936, Arp’s reliefs were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; a retrospective of the artist followed there in 1958, and finally another at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1969
.

We are grateful to the Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp Foundation, Berlin/Rolandswerth, for the kind assistance.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, Germany (gifted directly from the artist)
Private collection, Southern Germany (inherited from the above).

EXHIBITION: Arp, Galleria Schwarz, Milan, May 8 - June 4, 1965, cat. no. 32, illustrated (presumably different copy).

LITERATURE: Bernd Rau (ed.), Michael Seuphor (comp.), Hans Arp. Die Reliefs, Catalogue Raisonné, Stuttgart 1981, CR no. 703 (with b/w ill.).

In good to very good condition. The surface is slightly uneven in places. There are a few very small scuff marks here and there.
