Arnulf Rainer
1929 - 2025
Landschaft. Wohl um 1990.
Mixed media on a reproduction (Fortuné Méaulle, 1880).
Monogrammed and signed in the lower right. On wove paper. 29.5 x 40.5 cm (11.6 x 15.9 in), size of sheet. [AW].
• Here, Arnulf Rainer uses a work by Fortuné Méaulle (1843–1916), a renowned 19th-century French graphic artist, as the basis for his characteristic overpainting.
• Overpainting is considered the central principle of his work and a significant contribution to European postwar art from an art-historical perspective.
• Rainer is among the most important artists of the Austrian avant-garde after 1945.
• In 1959, he participated in documenta II in Kassel, as well as in the Venice Biennale in 1978 and 1980.
PROVENANCE: The artist’s studio (donation to Tierhilfe K.O.S., Vienna).
Private collection, Northern Germany.
In very good condition, with vibrant colors. The outer corners of the sheets are slightly bumped.
