1935 - 2020
Over the River (Project for Arkansas River, State of Colorado). 2005.
Mixed media. Oil, colored oil pastels, colored pencils, and graphite pencil, photography, tape, and cardboard, on cardboard mounted on wood. Original mounted on a stretcher frame and under plexiglass.
Signed and dated in the lower right, with the title along the lower edge of the image. Inscribed and dated on the reverse. 28.7 x 22.4 x 3.3 cm (11.2 x 8.8 x 1.2 in) incl. plexiglass cover. [AH].
The work is registered in the archive of the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, New York.
• A magnificent testament to an idea that was never realized: The “Over the River” project was planned for several decades but never carried out.
• Against the current: With a span of more than 9 kilometers and a length of over 60 kilometers, the monumental art project was to be installed over the Arkansas River.
• In 2008–2009, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., documented the project’s genesis and process in the exhibition “Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Over The River, a Work in Progress.”
• A comparable work from this project is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
PROVENANCE: Italian collection (acquired in 2005, A.L.P. Gallery, Milan).
Private collection, Bavaria.
Private collection, Bavaria (inherited from the above).
In good condition. The plexiglass shows minimal signs of wear, visible only when viewed in sided light, and a small amount of paint residue resulting from the production. The corners of the plexiglass are reinforced with tape.
