Georg Karl Pfahler
1926 - 2002
METRO-COL/64. 1964.
Acrylic on canvas.
Signed, dated, and titled on the reverse. 140 x 160 cm (55.1 x 62.9 in). [JS].
• Large-format work in Georg Karl Pfahler’s characteristic style.
• A rare two-color composition featuring the curved circular forms of the 1960s, which were replaced by sharp, angular lines in the 1970s.
• In 1970, Pfahler, together with Heinz Mack, Günther Uecker, and Thomas Lenk, exhibited at the Pavilion of the Federal Republic of Germany at the Venice Biennale.
• Part of a private collection in southern Germany for nearly 30 years.
We are grateful to Mr. Florian Pfahler, Pfahler Archive, for his kind assistance.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Bavaria (since 2000, Lempertz, Cologne).
in the family’s possession ever since.
LITERATURE: Lempertz, Auction 787, Contemporary Art, Cologne, June 6, 2000, cat. no. 905 (with ill.).
Large-format composition, in good condition. Primarily in the upper blue section, there are partial, faint hairline cracks, as well as faint signs of rubbing along the edges and isolated, faint studio and handling marks. The white border areas feature glazed overpainting, likely original. In the red section, there are isolated small spots or efflorescence that are visible under UV light, these are only faintly visible to the naked eye and do not detract from the overall harmonious impression. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the aid of a UV light source, and to the best of our knowledge and belief.
