Lot description
J.Co – 12/69. 1969.
Collage.
Signed and dated in the lower right, signed, dated and titled on the reverse. On wove paper. 77 x 42.5 cm (30.3 x 16.7 in), the full sheet.
[KA].
• Through spraying the paint and tearing and collaging the supporting material, the artist attains a fascinating interplay of calculation and chance.
• Fred Thieler is best known for his exploration of Informalism, particularly lyrical and expressive abstraction.
• Thieler's action painting shows clear parallels to Jackson Pollock's working method, whereby Thieler expands the pictorial space into the third dimension by combining different painting surfaces and collages.
PROVENANCE: Klaus Wittmann Collection.
Private collection Rhineland-Palatinate (inherited from the above in 1989).
Johannes Röhrig, "Fred Thieler: Bilder, Gebunden in Offener Form", in: Sammlung Klaus Wittmann I, Kunst-Station Sankt Peter Cologne, 1990, p. 8.
In good condition. Slightly rubbed in places. With isolated light creases and dents in the lower margin area, as well as two small tears (up to about 2.5 cm) in the lower center, however, these do not impair the very good overall impression.
