Lot description
Herzfeld. 1981.
Acrylic on canvas with PE strings and plexiglass.
Hoehme 80-13 (there mentioned as "around 1980", as no photo of the reverse side was available when the work catalog was compiled). Verso signed, dated, titled and inscribed. 110 x 79.5 x 14 cm (43.3 x 31.2 x 5.5 in), incl. the PE strings.
• Characteristic work that expands the pictorial space into the third dimension through the use of plastic cords.
• Fine example of Hoehme's rare play with representational associations: In "Herzfeld" the pink center is associated with the heart and the cords with the main arteries of the human body. - With his string pictures, Hoehme makes an art-historically significant contribution to the "open picture".
• Hoehme is considered the main representative of German Informalism and the creator of one of the most idiosyncratic and complex works of German post-war art.
PROVENANCE: Collection Hans Weitpert and Hilde Weitpert-Vogt, Stuttgart (until 2006).
Private collection Southern Germany (since 2006, Nagel auction on April 27, 2006).
EXHIBITION: Positionen 70/80, Städtische Galerie, Nordhorn, 1983, with illu. on p. 55.
Gerhard Hoehme. Das offene Bild, Kunstverein Braunschweig / Overbeck-Gesellschaft and Galerie Metta Linde, Lübeck, cat. no. 40, with illu. on p. 105.
LITERATURE: Gerhard Hoehme. Werke und Zeit 1948-1983, Stuttgart and Zürich 1983, with illu. on p. 258.
Nagel Kunstauktionen, Stuttgart, April 27, 2006, cat. no. 659, with illu.
In very good condition, with fresh colors. PE strings discolored consistent of age and slightly dusty. Metal jacket and short red PE string were mended in 2006 with original material from the artist‘s estate and in cooperation with his widow Ms. Margarete Hoehme. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the help of an ultraviolet light and to the best of knowledge. [JS]
