• The dynamic and energetic brushwork is rooted in the Berlin years during World War I.
• In the winter of 1915/16, E. L. Kirchner spent several weeks in Dr. Kohnstamm's clinic in Königstein im Taunus, returning in the spring of the same year to work on a commission for the design of the Brunnenhaus.
• The same year also saw the creation of the closely related paintings “Bahnhof in Königstein” (Gordon 469) and “Eisenbahn im Taunus” (Gordon 470, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich)
.

This work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.

PROVENANCE: Estate of the artist (Davos 1938, Kunstmuseum Basel 1946, with the estate stamp on the reverse).
Kunstkabinett Roman Norbert Ketterer, Stuttgart (1954).
Galerie Roman Norbert Ketterer, Campione d'Italia.
Galleria Henze, Campione d'Italia.
Private collection, Southern Germany (acquired from the above in 1988).

"Quietly perceptible, the works from the Taunus period introduce a new stylistic phase in Kirchner's work."
Annemarie Dube-Heynig, quoted from: E. L. Kirchner - Graphik, Munich 1961, p. 62.

Scene composed with a dynamic stroke, in very good condition. Isolated faint handling creases and tiny brown spots. The upper right corner with a tiny professionally repaired tear.
