Akt, sich an den rechten Fuß fassend. 1912.
Charcoal drawing.
Monogrammed in the lower right and dated in the lower left (by Lisa Kümmel). Inscribed “N” by Lisa Kümmel on the reverse. On brownish Ingres d'Arches MBM laid paper (with watermark). 47 x 31.3 cm (18.5 x 12.3 in), size of sheet. [CH].
• As in his paintings, Jawlensky also strives to stylize female beauty in his drawings of female nudes.
• From the estate of Lisa Kümmel (1897-1944): Alexej von Jawlensky's model, assistant, and close confidante.
• Part of a Hessian private collection for almost 60 years.
• Important date of origin: Jawlensky co-founded the “Neue Künstlervereinigung München” in 1909, his pictures were included in the “Blauer Reiter” exhibition tour in 1912 and he took part in Herwarth Walden's “Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon” in Berlin in 1913.
PROVENANCE: Lisa Kümmel (1897-1944) estate, Wiesbaden (directly from the artist).
Art dealer Dr. Ewald Rathke, Frankfurt am Main.
Private collection, Hesse (acquired from the above in 1966).
In family ownership ever since.

LITERATURE: Maria Jawlensky, Lucia Pieroni-Jawlensky and Angelica Jawlensky Bianconi, Alexej von Jawlensky. Catalogue Raisonné, Vol. 4 (Watercolors and Drawings 1890-1938), London 1998, p. 66, catalogue raisonné no. 100 (illustrated on p. 64).
In good condition. The sheet is overall slightly browned, more so in the margins, particularly on the right-hand side. The upper margin is slightly wavy. Edges slightly irregular in places. With a few tiny brown spots. With a small tear (approx. 1.2 cm) in the upper center of the sheet. Verso of the sheet corners with residues of an earlier mounting, slightly pressing through to recto and slightly shining through on recto.
