Lot description
I. 1967.
Silkscreen in colors.
Signed, dated, and inscribed with the dedication “Thank you, Mrs. Domberger, for your kindness and hospitality.”. Copy aside from the edition. On wove paper. 56 x 86 cm (22 x 33.8 in). Sheet: 76,5 x 104 cm (30,1 x 40,9 in).
Printed by Edition Domberger, Stuttgart, and published by the artist [KA].
• With glazed layers of color and subtly created halftones, Richard Hamilton masterfully explores the possibilities of screen printing.
• Pop meets concept: a film still becomes a complex work of art about image production, memory, and perception.
• The negative printing process reinterprets Bing Crosby as a surreal, nostalgically fractured icon.
• Other copies from the edition are in major museum collections, including the Tate, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Edition Domberger, Stuttgart.
Private collection, Baden-Württemberg (acquired from the above).
LITERATURE: Etienne Lullin, Stephen Coppel, Richard Hamilton. Druckgraphik und Multiples 1939-2002, Düsseldorf 2002, cat. no. 64 (illustrated).
Hansjörg Mayer (ed.), Richard Hamilton. Prints 1939–83, A Complete Catalog of Graphic Works, Stuttgart 1984, cat. no. 63 (illustrated).
In good condition. The edges and corners of the pages have a few small creases and squashes. There is a tiny tear in the middle of the right-hand edge of the page.
