Lot description
Woman with darkblue background with stars. 2008.
Wooden relief. Wawa wood, in color.
Signed and dated on the reverse. 140.5 x 98.5 cm (55.3 x 38.7 in). [AW].
• Expressive relief portrait in Stephan Balkenhol's signature style.
• He was one of the leading protagonists in the revival of figurative sculpture in the early 1980s.
• The representation of man is at the heart of his work. He does not depict the individual, but rather an anonymous, average and yet familiar figure.
• Comprehensive Balkenhol exhibitions have been shown at the following institutions: Smithsonian Institute and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, the Sprengel Museum, Hannover, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg, and the MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art, Duisburg.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki (with the gallery label on the revers).
Private collection VIenna.
Private collection Austria (acquired from the above).
In good condition. The surface and edges of the relief are slightly irregular due to the technique, however, this contributes to the overall effect of the artwork.
