Piquet Gothique aux Oiseaux. 1953.
Ceramics. White sherd with color engobe painting and scratch decor, glazed inside.
Numbered and inscribed "Edition Picasso" on the underside, as well as with the embossing stamps "Madoura Plein Feu" und "Edition Picasso". From an edition of 100 copies. 27.5 x 18 cm (10.8 x 7 in).

• Large, unusually shaped jug from Picasso's diverse ceramic oeuvre.
• The artist transferred the ancient technique of pottery into the 20th century through modern forms and figurative paintings.
• Picasso's irrepressible inventiveness and his great artistic repertoire are reflected again and again in his ceramics.
PROVENANCE: Private collection North Germany (family-owned for three generations).
LITERATURE: Alain Ramié, Picasso. Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1974, Vallauris 1988, no. 187 (illustrated in color, different copy).
In good condition. Slight rubbing in places and light soiling (somewhat more at the lower edge) and slight dusting. A small crack (approx. 2 cm) at the top of the spout , probably due to the manufacturing process.
