Ohne Titel. Um 1939.
Colored chalk over India ink.
Signed in lower right. On creme laid paper. 25 x 34 cm (9.8 x 13.3 in), the full sheet. [JS].
• A suspenseful composition: Schmidt-Rottluff powerfully placed the vertical line of the signal mast over a landscape composed of the horizontal lines of water, horizon and sky.
• A striking testimony to Schmidt-Rottluff's extraordinary mastery of drawing and color.
• Part of a North German private collection for almost 30 years.
The work is doccumented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.
PROVENANCE: Private collection Northern Germany (since 1995, Ketterer Kunst, May 30, 1995, lot 175).
LITERATURE: Ketterer Kunst, 204th auction, Moderne Kunst I, May 30, 1995, lot 175, no p. (illustrated with the title "Signal an der Elbe").
In good condition, minimally browned and with very few, very tiny foxing spots. Left sheet edge with minimal creases.
