Sheet 4 from the series "Zigeuner" [historical title]
The color lithograph “Zwei Zigeunermädchen im Wohnraum” can be considered the most sensual of the new prints in the series that Otto Mueller published in 1927 under the title “Zigeuner” (Gypsies) [historical title]. Otto Mueller, who could once again put his artistic and technical experience to good use in this series, had high hopes for the portfolio's success, which was not to be. As a result, the color lithographs were sold individually, and complete copies of the portfolio are now almost impossible to find on the market. However, the prints are designed in such a way that they retain their impact even without the original context. The darkened room in which the two young women linger is imbued with a special atmosphere because the physicality of the two remains diffuse, and only their eyes and mouths send signals from the darkness. Mueller visualizes here an old longing which, according to his own statement, is intended to evoke a close connection with the Sinti and their way of life. At the same time, however, the sheet is testimony to Otto Mueller's vital creative power in this theme.
In good condition. With barely noticeable creases at the edges, some slight compression, and minor tears that have been expertly repaired.
