Lot description
Heinrich Maria Davringhausen
1894 - 1970
Monumente. 1960.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated lower right. Monogrammed, twice dated, and inscribed “Komp. XIX” on the reverse of the stretcher. 97 x 130 cm (38.1 x 51.1 in). [CH].

• Davringhausen broke away from representational painting as early as 1931, which is why his work was considered “degenerate” by the National Socialists.
• From 1945 onwards, the artist lived in Haut-de-Cagnes, where he produced an extensive body of abstract late work.
• His works from these years are characterized by a harmony of colors and forms based on balance.
• From the artist's estate, offered for the first time on the international auction market
.

PROVENANCE: Estate of the artist.
Private collection, Berlin (acquired from the above in 2010).

EXHIBITION: H. M. Davringhausen, Stadttheater Remscheid, Remscheid, January 1962, cat. no. 21 (with ill.).
Heinrich Maria Davringhausen. Spätwerk (Late Work), Leopold Hoesch Museum, Düren, December 15, 1991–February 9, 1992, cat. no. 12 (with color illustration, p. 25).

LITERATURE: Dorothea Eimert, Heinrich Maria Davringhausen. Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Cologne 1995, p. 298, CR no. 558 (b/w illu.).

Good overall impression. Overall with lCraquelée. Individual tiny areas of color loss at the edges of the image, probably due to framing, and in the white areas. One pressure mark at the bottom right. Isolated slight signs of rubbing.
The condition report was prepared in daylight and with the aid of a UV light source to the best of our knowledge and belief. [EH]
