Lot description
Ohne Titel (Eau-forte V). 1957.
Etching in colors with aquatint.
Gatto 5. Signed and numbered. From an edition of 100 copies. On BFK Rives wove paper (with watermark). 43.7 x 58.8 cm (17.2 x 23.1 in). Sheet: 50,5 x 65,7 cm (19,9 x 25,9 in).
Printed and published by Atelier Lacourière, Paris (with the embossing stamp). [JS].
• This is one of the earliest color etchings by the protagonist of French Informalism.
• On his quest for non-figurative painting, Soulage pursued a gestural-intuitive style in the 1950s.
• In "Eau-forte V", Soulage transferred the structure of the broad brushstroke to the print medium with great mastery.
• Paintings and prints from the important 1950s are part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Fred Jahn, Munich.
Private collection (acquired from the above).
In good condition. Verso of the edges with mounting tape, partly minimally showing through to the recto. Slightly browned and light-stained. The left edge of the sheet with a small, inconspicuous tear and with very few tiny brown spots and traces of rubbing in the margin.
