Lot description
Ohne Titel (#444 Compactness). 1947.
Oil on canvas.
Signed, dated and inscribed with the artist's signet between the date in the lower right. Also inscribed with the work number “444”, dated “47-8” and with the artist's signet between the date on the reverse of the canvas. Signed twice on the stretcher and marked by a hand other than that of the artist. 66.5 x 86.5 cm (26.1 x 34 in). [CH].
• Drewes studied under Paul Klee, Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1921 and 1922.
• In 1930, he emigrated to the United States, where he established contact with, among others, Wassily Kandinsky, who helped him to stage his first solo exhibitions.
• In 1937, Drewes co-founded the American Abstract Artists.
• Starting in 1946, he taught at the School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
• Drewes' paintings from the 1940s are among the most sought-after works on the international auction market (source: artprice.com).
• In 2021/22, the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland, presented a comprehensive retrospective of the artist's work.
