Erich Heckel
1883 - 1970
Blick auf Goslar. 1937.
Tempera on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right. Signed and dated on the reverse of the canvas, and signed, dated, and titled on the stretcher. 98 x 110 cm (38.5 x 43.3 in).
View of Goslar from the Klusfelsen looking west. In the foreground, the Breite Tor; in the background, from left to right: the Imperial Palace, the Marktkirche, St. Stephen’s Church, St. James’ Church, and the Neuwerk Church. [AW].

• Characteristic city panorama: the composition, perspective, and lighting reveal Erich Heckel’s painterly genius.
• Harmonious union of architecture and landscape: a particularly vivid depiction of the old imperial city with its striking church towers and medieval city fortifications.
• The second version of this view was destroyed in 1945 (WVZ No. 1937-7).
• Preparatory studies in the Brücke Museum in Berlin attest to Heckel’s meticulous working method
.
