Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
1864 - 1901
Femme au tub. 1896.
Lithograph in colors.
Monogrammed in the stone. From an edition of 100 copies. On delicate wove paper (with truncated watermark G. Pellet/T. Lautrec). 37 x 51.2 cm (14.5 x 20.1 in), the full sheet.
Sheet 4 of a total of 10 lithographs and cover sheet from the "Elles" portfolio. Published by Gustave Pellet, 1896. [AR].
- From the famous “Elles” portfolio.
• With authenticity and sensitivity, the artist depicts the lives of prostitutes and everyday life in the “maisons closes,” the brothels of Paris.
• Additional copies can be found in public museum collections, including The Art Institute, Chicago, and the Graphische Sammlung, Munich.
• Part of the same private collection for 30 years.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Heiner Friedrich, Cologne.
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia (acquired from the above in 1995).
LITERATURE: Götz Adriani, Toulouse-Lautrec. Das gesamte graphische Werk, 2nd edition, Cologne 1986, CR no. 175 (with color illustration, probably a different copy).
Wolfgang Wittrock, Toulouse-Lautrec. The Complete Prints, Vol. one, London 1985, CR no. 159 (with color ill., probably different copy).
Loys Delteil, Le Peintre-Graveur Illustré, volume 11, H. de Toulouse-Lautrec, seconde partie, Paris 1920, CR no. 183 (with b/w illustration, probably a different copy).
Good overall impression. Mounted on delicate Japanese paper for stabilization. Small and larger tears and missing areas in the upper left and in the image on the right, professionally restored, a small area in the left tub with a slight color deviation, probably retouched. Further small holes visible against the light. Overall browned, slightly more pronounced mount staining, causing the colors to appear somewhat dull. The edges of the sheet are irregularly trimmed and there are small missing areas at the top.
